Sustaining the environment is an important focus area of Apollo. The major aim of this initiative is to raise people's awareness and provide a better environment to our stakeholders and communities surrounding our manufacturing locations. This is why at Apollo various projects have been undertaken to combat several environmental problems based under the following themes:

1. Solid Waste Management and Sanitation (SPARSH)

India generates over 60 million tonnes of waste, out of which about 69% is collected. It’s appalling to observe that only 30% of the collected waste is treated and the rest is taken to land fill sites. The ‘Swachh Bharat’ initiative is the need of the hour which aims to promote clean hygienic practices and use of proper sanitation.?To support the cause, the organisation undertook initiative SPARSH, swachh banao. This initiative aims at providing comprehensive solution for better health and hygiene which includes proper waste management and promoting the use of toilets.

SPARSH stands for : S- Segregate Waste, P- Practice Composting, A- Awareness Generation, R- Reduce-Reuse-Recycle, S- Safe Sanitation, H- Hygiene for All.

Clean My Transport Nagar (CMTN), Clean My Village (CMV), Sanitation Management and End- of-Life Tyres (ELT) projects are initiated under SPARSH umbrella.

Further to support the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, organisation has also constructed toilet cum bathing space for the underprivileged communities around Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and Chinnapandur (Andhra Pradesh) manufacturing location.

ELT projects promotes recycling of waste tyres by constructing playgrounds. Apollo Tyres has been strategically evaluating various ways on how to increase the product life cycle through expansion of re-treading footprint, which reinforces the Re-use concept. In addition the organisation is also exploring various ways of using the ELT in innovative and yet useful ways such as play structures to steer away from land fill, which reinforces the Recycle concept.

2. Biodiversity Conservation

Mangrove conservation is a key initiative under the Biodiversity theme. It is in partnership with Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). The project is located in Kunhimangalam village in Kannur district, which is one of the largest mangrove villages of Kerala. The project established a hub located in the natural ecosystem for mangrove-based education, serving as an open air laboratory for research and promoting restoration through community and government participation.?Other aspects of the project include a mangrove nursery and community based initiatives to enhance public awareness and reduce threats to mangroves.

The organisation has initiatives towards mitigation of climate change with the help of projects like afforestation. Under afforestation project there are a total of 3, 50,000 teak and red sandal trees in Tamilnadu for emission reduction. As per estimation, around 10,100 tonnes of CO2 has been sequestered from these trees.

In addition to the above initiatives, some local initiatives are undertaken under Environment category. These initiatives are based on local stakeholder requirement and implemented in the 20-30 km radius of our manufacturing locations. Details of such initiatives are below:?

Access to purified drinking water:? The organisation has set up a purified drinking water RO plant at Oragadam village from which around 506 households (2024 people)?are directly benefited with an average monthly consumption of 67,300 litres of purified water.

Eco restoration and improvement of water bodies: The projects are designed for improving water bodies with focus on restoring and enhancing the aqua-biodiversity. Within this,?pond restoration projects are undertaken at Chennai, Limda and Perambra locations.

River conservation project: As a novel community initiative, the organisation launched a Participatory Conservation project for Chalakudy River in Kerala which was implemented in three phases covering a period of three years (2016 to 2019). The project mainly focuses on the assessment and conservation of Riparian vegetation and associated Biodiversity of Chalakudy River in Kerala.

Biogas Unit Installation: The use of renewable energy proliferation is a key to address the issue of climate change - the Biogas project supports this cause. At Limda (Gujarat) the organisation has installed individual Biogas units for the beneficiaries of its livelihood programme. Usage of Biogas not only helps in saving time and cost of collecting firewood, but also helps women in reducing health risks caused due to inhalation of smoke while cooking in wood.
